Margarine / Vegetable Oil: Heart-healthy varieties
Regular margarine and vegetable cooking oils have just as many grams of fat and a similar calories per serving as butter does, although since from vegetable sources, does not have dietary cholesterol as butter and lard do. Therefore, serving sizes should be kept to a minimum--remember cooking with large amounts of vegetable oils or margarine may not add cholesterol, but do add significant amounts of calories, a concern if weight control is an issue. Reduced-fat margarines are now available by many manufacturers, however, these often have significantly more than 30% or even 50% of their calories from fat. Promise is one company that currently offers an "ultra" fat-free margarine product. Canola oil margarine is preferred to other types of vegetable oil margarines, because of its high content of the monounsaturated oleic acid. Promise brand offers excellent low- and ultra-low ("fat free") brands of canola margarine.
